Michael Jacksons memorial was today, the 7th July 2009.
I just finished watching The Dangerous Tour on television tonight and I felt like writing some words down about my relationship with Michael Jacksons music, that I stupidly thought I didn’t connect to just some days ago!
I admit I was one of those who liked some of the rude jokes that circulated after he was found dead. I admit I’ve never been a fan….Then today I stopped by some fans memorial place in town here in Stockholm. And I got stuck there listening to Michael Jackson songs and watch the candles, the roses, the fans and the tears. And I realized that Michael actually HAS touched MY heart.
A long time ago… I was a kid in middleschool in 1994 when I first sang ”Heal The World” in music-class. I remember how we sang it a lot in that class and I loved it. I also danced along to ”Black or White” and I’ve always liked the beat in ”Billy Jean”. A lot of more songs I remember dancing and singing to, that I never really realized was Michael Jacksons work comes to mind now today (”Jam”, ”Smooth Criminal”, ”ABC”, ”I Want You Back” for example). It’s weird… His beat can be found in everything. There are samples, imitations, dances (I actually even think there is a sample of ”Jam” in one of Segas game Sonic 3!!) …and he started it all! I think it’s amazing and as I said; I don’t consider myself a fan. I know very little about him, but his music tells me all I need to know
He was a true entertainer, I see that now and wish that I couldn’ve been at a concert of him. I sound like someone who just ”suddenly became a fan cause he has died”. I’m not a fan. He has just always been around in some way in the background of my life, since I’ve grown up loving to sing and loving music. Growing up in the middle of the 80’s and throughout the 90’s when he was still giving out hits and preforming, it was kinda hard not to sing along and try to do the moonwalk! ;D (I know someone tried to tell me how Michael did the moonwalk, but I still to this day think it’s a mystery ;D For me Michael was just un-human when he did those steps ;D )
If I could get more tattoos (my body doesn’t like me having tattoos anymore), I would do one of Marilyn Monroe…and one of Michael Jackson where he stands in one of his most famous dance-poses.
Too bad a lot of people took him for granted while he lived. Even I.
Rest In Peace, Michael.
(ps. when I wanna look cool out in the bars and clubs, I wear a hat, a tie and one glove, not even thinking about who I imitate ;D )
